West Virginia State University provides an opportunity for students to participate in a paid internship program which allows for career exploration and development, and to learn new skills. The purpose of this program is to provide students with meaningful work experience and increase their job opportunities upon graduation.
Eligibility criteria
- Enrolled as a continuing student in a degree-seeking program
- Meets WVSU's satisfactory academic progress requirements
- Enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours during the academic term the paid internship is awarded with the EXCEPTION of the summer term
- Enrolled in spring term to participate in summer term
- Completed 24 credit hours with at least a grade of “C” in English 101
- Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.50 or higher
academic credit options
- *Option 1 - For academic credit:
- 150 hours at the internship site for 3 credit hours
- 100 hours at the internship site for 2 credit hours
*Additional credit hours will be determined by the Academic Department
- Option 2 - Not for academic credit:
- At least 50 hours at the internship site
Pay rate
The pay rate will be a minimum of $15.00 per hour. The actual rate will be determined by Career Services and the Internship site.

- Activate a Handshake account and complete the profile.
- Submit resume, unofficial transcript and a letter of recommendation (from the Department Chair for the student's major, faculty/staff member or community leader) to Career Services.
- Submit an essay of why you deserve this paid internship to Career Services.
- Career Services staff will review the internship interest form, qualifications, career interests and suitability for the program.
