Our Approach

West Virginia State University is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all members of our community. As a values-driven university, we take serioulsy our commitment to responsibility and excellence as they correspond to our response to the coronavirus pandemic. This website provides guidance for managing the university's expectations for the safe return of faculty and staff to workspaces and common areas on campus after remote working, quarantine, illness or leave, due to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The university's approach is informed by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources, and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.

West Virginia State University students, faculty and staff worked hard to successfully complete the fall 2020 semester. Congratulations on the healthy payoff for all of your diligence in following the 3 W's of washing your hands, watching your social distance and wearing a face covering.

Return to Campus Schedule

All employees and students will be required to complete and submit a health assessment and travel notification form prior to arriving back on campus for the spring semester. The form will be distributed to employees via the Office of Human Resources and to students via the Office of Student Affairs. Future periodic updates may be required.

Employees

Employees will begin transitioning from remote to campus-based work in phases beginning in early January 2021.  By the week of January 4, 2021, we anticipate most employees will have returned to campus, with 9- and 10-month faculty returning January 7, 2021. Supervisors will communicate specific schedules with their offices and teams. Employees and Faculty will be mandated to submit a negative COVID-19 test result on the first day they return.  Test results can only be 3 to 5 days from the date of returning to campus. Before returning to campus, all employees will participate in training via Safety Skills Training that describes WVSU’s health and safety practices. Employees returning to campus from other countries, or who have been in recent contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, will be required to quarantine for a period of 14 days.

More information can be viewed in Administrative Policy #003: COVID-19 Personnel Policy.

Students

WVSU serves three student populations: distance learners who engage in online instruction (with the exception of some residency experiences in select programs), both residential and non-residential students who attend a hybrid blend of in-seat and online classes, and both residential and non-residential students who attend in-seat classes only.

WVSU’s spring semester will begin Monday, January 11, 2021.

Residential students will begin arriving on campus in stages. Students with last names A-L will return Thursday, January 7; M-R will return Friday, January 8; S-Z will return Saturday, January 9. All residential students will have to provide a negative COVID-19 test result to Mr. Derrien Williams, Residence Life Director, and EHS@wvstateu.edu before obtaining access to the campus. Test must be taken 3 to 5 days prior to your return to campus and results must be submitted or presented upon your return. We are encouraging anyone that may assist students moving in to please self-examine and if you are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 or Influenza to please refrain from entering
campus. Residential students will also be notified about arrival times.

International students that may have been unable to obtain a COVID-19 test in their home will be allowed to get tested on Thursday, January 7, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at FamilyCare in the Wilson University Union.

Someone in self-quarantine stays separated from others, and they limit movement outside of their home or current place of residence. Accommodations will be made for such students to begin their classes online.
