Seattle Symphony Principal Flutist Demarre McGill to Present Master Class

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Critically acclaimed performer Demarre McGill, principal flutist of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, will give a master class as the headline event of West Virginia State University’s first Flute Day on Saturday, March 11, 2023.

McGill has appeared as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Seattle, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Grant Park, San Diego and Baltimore symphony orchestras and, at age 15, the Chicago Symphony. He previously served as principal flute of the Dallas Symphony, San Diego Symphony, Florida Orchestra, and Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He recently served as acting principal flute of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and earlier with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

As an educator, McGill has performed, coached and presented master classes in South Africa, Korea, Japan, Quebec and throughout the United States. In August of 2019, he was named Associate Professor of Flute at Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and is an artist-faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School. He received a bachelor’s degree from The Curtis Institute of Music and a Master's degree at The Juilliard School. For more information, please visit www.demarremcgill.com.

Flute Day will feature several classes for flute players of all ages, including clinics on the topics of technique and practice skills. The event will also feature a Yoga for Flutists class and an open reading session of flute choir repertoire. A representative from the Flute Center of New York will have a vendor table, where flutists will have the opportunity to try and purchase a variety of flutes, headjoints and accessories.

To register for the event, please contact Allison Kessinger at (304) 766-3199 or by email at Allison.Kessinger@wvstateu.edu.

McGill’s appearance is made possible by the sponsorship of Fifth Third Bank in partnership with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
