West Virginia State University professor named one of 50 Most Influential Professors in Education

Institute, WV – Educators are the unsung heroes of modern civilization. Without them, there would be no one to pass on the knowledge gained from the past to scientists, lawmakers, and leaders of tomorrow. But who teaches the teachers? The educators at the top universities and colleges who specialize in preparing teachers for the classroom are some of the most dedicated and important people in society. West Virginia State University’s own Dr. Sandra Orr was recently named one of the 50 most influential professors in education in the United States according to Masters In Education.org. http://mastersineducation.org/the-50-most-influential-professors-in-education.

Dr. Orr is a professor and Chair of the West Virginia State University Department of Education. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Oklahoma, her Masters of Natural Science from the University of Oklahoma, her Certificate of Advanced Studies from Appalachian State University, and her Doctor of Education from Marshall University Graduate College.

“As a little girl I would always play teacher,” says Dr. Orr. “Now as a professor, I love the ‘aha’ moment when you can visually see that someone understands a concept and it shows on their face.”

Her first teaching job was in mathematics at Memorial High School in Houston, TX. She also held several math teaching positions at junior highs and high schools in Maryland before making the move to higher education at WVSU.

WVSU’s Education program has received past recognition. The WVSU Teacher Preparation Program was recognized by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) in 2007. According to Wireless Generation, a leading education software provider of innovative education software, data systems, and assessment tools for reading, writing and math aimed at improving students and schools, WVSU is the only teacher preparation program in West Virginia. WVSU is also only one of three programs on the East Coast that provide advanced technology training in Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBLES) using a Palm Pilot – Tungsten E2.
