State of "State" is Sept. 20

President Hazo W. Carter, Jr. will give his annual address to the opening convocation of the fall semester at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20 in the P.A. Williams Auditorium, Ferrell Hall. The event is open to students, faculty, staff, alumni, retirees and the public. This will mark President Carter's 25^th State of "State" address to the opening convocation and his eighth State of the University address since WVSU became a University in 2004.

In his remarks, President Carter will give highlights of the past year as well as outline new activities and projects. He is expected to update the audience on plans for the renovation and addition to Fleming Hall and the process for adding a new residence hall.

President  Carter. became the ninth president of the (then) West Virginia State College in 1987.  He is credited for successfully leading a 12-year quest to regain the institution's 1890 land-grant status along with accompanying state and federal funding.

Following a resolution by the National Alumni Association in 2000, Dr. Carter provided the leadership that resulted in West Virginia State College being designated as West Virginia State University. On April 7, 2004, Governor Bob Wise signed the bill that officially changed the institution's status to that of university.

President Carter is active in many local, state-wide, and national organizations. He is Chair of the Martin Luther King, Jr. West Virginia Holiday Commission. On a national level he serves on the President's Board of Advisors for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
