Summer Camps on Campus

High School students in the Upward Bound summer component are on campus for six weeks staying in the residence halls. They spend time in classes to help them succeed in college such as mathematics, science, literature, communications, computers, drama, and careers. There is also an opportunity to travel and attend cultural activities. Yellow Jacket coaches host camps in football, mens basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball. These are usually one-week day camps and there is a fee for participating. For information go to http://www.wvsuyellowjackets.com/ or call the Athletics Office at 304-766-3165.

The Summer Transportation Institute returns to the campus from June 20 to July 2. This is a free residential camp for young people interested in any aspect of the transportation industry. The Health Science Technology Academy (HSTA), is a residential camp for 10th graders enrolled in local HSTA programs as well as teachers. It will be held July 17 - 22. Participants focus on using forensic techniques including DNA, fingerprint and handwriting analysis for crime-scene investigations. The camp culminates in mock crime scenarios with campers using the knowledge they have gained to solve the mystery of "who done it." Although not officially on the campus, the Hip Hop Boot Camp is a big hit with young people in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in the music business. It will be held July 24 - 29 at Camp Virgil Tate. Students will stay at the camp and participate in hands-on activities in artistic production as well as literacy and health enhancements. The Charleston Stage Company will also hold its arts camps in the WVSU Davis Fine Arts Building. The Elementary Camp is from June 20 to July 1. The Junior and Senior High School Camp will be July 11 to 22. There is a $300 charge with some scholarships available. The fall semester of classes at WVSU begins August 22.
