Meet the Director of Housing and Residence Life
Dear Yellow Jacket Nation,
As I enter my third year as Director of Housing and Residence Life at West Virginia State University, I am filled with gratitude for the journey thus far and excitement for what lies ahead.
When I began this chapter at WVSU, my goal was simple: to create a residential experience where students feel seen, heard, supported, and challenged to grow. That commitment remains at the heart of everything I do. I believe housing is more than just a place to sleep. It is a place to build relationships, develop independence, discover your potential, and find a sense of belonging.
Over the past two years, I have been humbled to receive the 2025 Student Success Award and the 2026 Staff Member of the Year Award. I am truly grateful for these honors, as they remind me that the care, dedication, and intention we pour into our work make a difference. More importantly, they encourage me to keep showing up for the students and community I have the privilege of serving.
Many of you know me as “Mama J,” a name that has followed me since my early days at Albany State University. Whether you see me walking through the residence halls, attending a campus event, or simply checking in to see how your day is going, know that I care about your experience here. I will always lead with heart, hold you to high standards, and encourage you to become the best version of yourself.
As we continue this journey together, I look forward to strengthening our residential communities, creating meaningful opportunities for student engagement, and continuing to make Housing and Residence Life a place where every Yellow Jacket feels valued and supported.
Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your journey here at WVSU. It is a privilege I do not take lightly, and I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve, grow, and make a difference alongside you.
Creating a Home for Every Yellow Jacket.
With Yellow Jacket pride,
Ms. Shelby Joiner
