Ombudsperson Services

The Counseling and Academic Support Services Director serves as the student advocate for students who wish to report biased-motivated incidents or practices.  If you feel that you have been treated inappropriately by another student or by a faculty/staff member, and that inappropriate treatment was based on a bias or prejudice, you may contact my office.

If you wish to file a complaint, please review the process below.  Once you have reviewed the complaint process, you may click here to print an official complaint form (print form & submit it to me).  The greatest effort will be made to provide timely attention to and resolution of your complaints.

Complaint Process

If you feel like you have been mistreated due to your race, ethnicity, gender, size, or age call the Counseling and Academic Support Services (304) 766-3262.  We may be able to help.  The first step in the process is to file an official complaint, (click here for the form to print & fill out) or in person (125 Sullivan Hall, East).  An interview must be held with the claimant before the process can move forward.

The pre-complaint stage will begin as soon as the official complaint is filed and the interview takes place.  During the pre-complaint stage, the Director will have five days to investigate the case and submit her findings.  Depending on the claimant's satisfaction with the investigator's findings, the complaint may be forwarded to the Judicial Affairs Coordinator (if the claim is against another student) or the Interim Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs (if the complaint is against a faculty or staff member).

The complaint process is then facilitated by those offices; however, the Director will continue to follow the case and will serve as the student's advocate in working to resolve the situation.
