WVSU Chemistry Students Earn National Recognition for 12th Consecutive Year

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – For the 12th consecutive year, West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has been named a Green Chemistry Student Chapter Award winner. The student group was also recognized by the national ACS organization with a Commendable Chapter Award for the programs and activities they put on during the year.

“The awards recognize the dedication these students have to serve their community in STEM outreach and pursue their education,” said Dr. Micheal Fultz, a WVSU chemistry professor and faculty advisor to the ACS student chapter. “They spend countless hours preparing activities, interacting with the community, and finding ways to prepare for their future.”

WVSU’s ACS chapter is comprised of more than 25 students and is one of the most active student organizations on campus. The chapter was praised for its outreach, professional development efforts and activities promoting chemistry to area youth by the ACS with this year’s awards.

Student chapter awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, or honorable mention by the ACS. This year, the ACS awarded 49 chapters with outstanding, 74 chapters with commendable, and 87 chapters with an honorable mention. Twenty-seven student chapters also received a Green Chemistry Award for completing green chemistry activities throughout the year.

WVSU students host numerous STEM-related activities on campus or virtually to help others learn about science and the importance of green chemistry.

Founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress, the American Chemical Society is one of the world’s largest scientific organizations with more than 152,000 members in more than 130 countries. The organization’s vision is to improve people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry. For more information, visit www.acs.org.
