West Virginia State University Named to Victory Media’s 2017 Military Friendly® Schools List
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University (WVSU) has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs℠ and Military Spouse. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career.

“At West Virginia State, we have an extensive history of students, alumni, faculty and staff who have served our country through military service, and we pride ourselves on engaging and supporting our military students and veterans so they can thrive while completing their education and pursuing career goals,” said WVSU President Anthony L. Jenkins. “As a Veteran, I understand the need for West Virginia State University to provide a wide range of resources, services and outreach efforts for our military and veteran students to be successful throughout their educational journey. And I am committed to doing so. ”

WVSU’s Military Science program was established in 1891 when the institution was chartered by the West Virginia Legislature. As a land-grant institution, one of its functions was to educate citizens in the military sciences.  The University established a Military Student Services Center in 2012 to honor those who served in the Armed Forces. The Center acts as a one-stop shop for veterans as they transition from the military to life as a university student. Additionally, in 2015, WVSU Extension Service created a full-time extension agent position focusing on introducing veteran and active military populations to opportunities in agriculture.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation.

WVSU will be showcased along with other 2017 Military Friendly® Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly® Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs® and Military Spouse Magazine and on militaryfriendly.com.

About Military Friendly® Schools:
The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions. The survey questions, methodology, criteria and weightings were developed by Victory Media with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. Data calculations and tabulations were independently evaluated for completeness and accuracy by EY. The survey is administered for free and is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate. Criteria for consideration can be found at militaryfamilies.com.
