Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremonies.

Spring 2021 Commencement Information updated

West Virginia State University is pleased to congratulate you on your candidacy for graduation this Spring 2021. The details of this important event scheduled for April 24, 2021, are outlined below. Please review this information closely to ensure that you are prepared to enjoy this day of celebration to the fullest. 

Instead of four ceremonies, there will now be only TWO ceremonies.

The ceremony for the College of Professional Studies and the College of Natural Sciences & Mathematics will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. on April 24, 2021.
The ceremony for the College of Business & Social Sciences and the College of Arts & Humanities will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m. on April 24, 2021.

The University will adhere to COVID Guidelines that ensure the safety of our students, staff, faculty, and guests. Commencement will be held in the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center. Custom masks will be provided for each graduate. Masks are mandatory for all students, guests, staff, faculty, and platform party.

Below are specific times for your arrival, procession, and ceremony start times:

When you arrive on campus, you will enter through the west side door close to the parking lot in Fleming Hall. There will be signs and volunteers at the door to assist you. A video will be sent out next week to show you where to go upon arrival, how to wear proper cap and gown regalia, and other informational items.
Please do not bring personal belongings to the Mark Cardwell Court (Fleming upstairs gym). Your personal items cannot be guaranteed that they would be secure.
  • Cap and gown (regalia):  Your cap and gown can be retrieved from the University Bookstore located in the University Union, beginning on April 19, 2021. You must present your receipt from the Cashier’s Office showing payment of the graduation fee to pick up your cap and gown.
  • Guest tickets will be available in the Cashier’s Office (117 Ferrell Hall) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, April 19, 2021.
  • Graduates must pay the graduation fee to receive your two guest tickets. Be sure to keep this receipt as it will be needed to pick up your cap and gown.
  • The University Bookstore is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • If you have any issues with your regalia, please contact the Office of Registration and Records immediately.
  • The West Virginia State University commencement exercise is a very formal academic occasion. Academic regalia is limited to cap (w/tassel), gown, and University issued academic honor cords only.
  • Grades/Honor Cords/Name Pronunciation: 
Each candidate’s name is read prior to receiving their degree.If you have any concerns with the pronunciation of your name, contact the Office of Registration and Records between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23 to clarify the proper pronunciation. Please ask for Donna Hunter.
  • Honor cords may be worn only by those students graduating with academic honors and by students in campus chapters of National Honor Societies. Honor cords will be distributed to those students graduating with academic honors from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021 at the Registrar’s Office (128 Ferrell Hall).

At least two weeks' advance notice will help us to provide seamless access.
  • Students and guests please be mindful that there are multiple ceremonies and limited parking so please leave from Walker and drive to Ferrell Hall for pictures. There will be a professional photographer at Ferrell Hall to take pictures.

  • Guests are granted entry 30 minutes prior to ceremony. Each graduate receives two tickets. There are to be no children on the laps of other children or adults. One occupant is allowed per seat. Each ticket is for one person, regardless of age or size.
  • Strict COVID Guidelines will be enforced (social distancing and mandatory masks).
