ROOTEd Peer Education

If you are interested in diversity issues and social justice, and would like to make a difference, here is your chance! The Office of Multicultural Affairs has created a social justice peer education course and student organization called R.O.O.T.Ed (Respecting Ourselves and Others Through Education). Taking the 3 credit hour course (EDUC 110) is a prerequisite for joining the organization. We are currently recruiting students to be trained as Peer Educators for the Fall 2005 - Spring 2006 academic year.  Benefits and responsibilities include:

• students are trained and officially certified as peer educators
• students can earn 3 hours college credit
• students attend off-campus, sometimes out-of-state, conferences
• students provide educational programs to their peers
• students host campus-wide social events
• students serve as role models and leaders for their peers

This Peer Education Program was established in 2002 and was based on a peer facilitation model developed by the Intercultural Resource Center at Columbia University in New York. The first year of the peer education program was highly successful with 18 programs being conducted. Programs included a social justice conference and co sponsorship of the WV State 2003 Multicultural Festival whose motto was, “ The many faces of Americans: All peoples equal in one nation.”  Based on this highly successful program a course has been adopted into our education program to teach students how to be a social justice peer educator; completion of this course is now required for admission into the peer education program.
