Peer Educators

Our “Buzz About Choices” peer education program strives to provide a varied approach to alcohol awareness, incorporating peer education workshops to inform students about alcohol issues, as well as hosting activities that call attention to alternative means of alcohol-free socializing.

College students interested in becoming a certified peer educator may submit an application and after careful screening, those students approved will receive certification training in a range of venues including attending a BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Education Network national conference. Once certified, the student will deliver more formal educational presentations in a variety of settings including academic classrooms, athletic team meetings, campus organizational meetings, new student orientations and residence hall workshops.

In addition, the peer educators host several social activities that promote the message of responsible drinking while providing alternative recreational options to contrast the perception that students can only have fun if they are under the influence. These events include an annual Alcohol Awareness Week held in the fall, and an annual Safe Spring Break campaign hosted in the spring. Further, several events of a smaller scope will be added as the need is identified (i.e., Homecoming after-the-game party).
