    WHO NEEDS ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE?
Most of us ask for assistance when we want to buy a computer, build a deck, or bake a turkey. If you're doing something new, complicated, or important, why wouldn't you want help? Yet, many students are reluctant to ask for help with their college classes. They seem to think they should solo through college. Tutoring and other academic assistance services are available, not because we have a few deficient students who can't make it on their own, but because all college students regularly need help to do their best work

NOTE: Instructors are your first and best resources. Do yourself a favor and get to know them; they'll help keep you on track.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI)
SI is an academic support program utilizing peer-assisted study sessions to help students with particularly demanding or difficult academic courses. SI sessions offer an opportunity for students to work together with classmates, compare notes, discuss readings, ask questions, develop study materials, and prepare for examinations. An SI Student Leader who has had the course, has been recommended by faculty, and has been trained to lead group study sessions is assigned to the class. The SI Leader attends selected class meetings, does the required reading and assignments, and also meets regularly with the instructor to insure that the sessions address potential problem areas.

The purpose of the SI session is not to "re-teach" the class, but rather to help students learn how to master the material. SI sessions emphasize group problem-solving and developing learning strategies appropriate to the demands of the course. SI is currently available for a relatively small number of courses. Sessions are normally offered two or three times weekly on days that will accommodate most class members. Any enrolled student may attend.

HOW CAN I BECOME A PEER TUTOR OR SI LEADER?
Peer tutors are undergraduate and graduate students who particularly like learning and helping their classmates. To be eligible students must have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and get a recommendation from an instructor. The pay is $7.50 per hour. Tutors also attend a paid ten-hour training program. SI Leaders are paid a flat rate for one class, beginning at $1000.00 for the semester. For more information:

    OTHER ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE SERVICES

    LEARNING EFFECTIVENESS WORKSHOPS
Though you were taught math, history, and other subjects in high school, it's not likely you were also taught how to learn those things. For example, have you ever...

      • read a few pages of a textbook, then wondered what it was you just read?
      • studied for an exam that didn't ask any of the questions you prepared for?
      • taken notes that made no sense two weeks later?
      • memorized everything in the chapter and still earned a 'C' on the test?

Your ability to learn is not fixed; learning is a skill that can be improved. Workshops and individual sessions are available to help you develop strategies that will make your studying both more efficient and more effective. Sessions are available in motivation, notetaking, reading comprehension, test preparation, and time managementall by arrangement.

For further workshop information call Tom McClure at 766-3041, email mcclure@wvstateu.edu, or stop by 117 Sullivan Hall, East.
