International Conductor's Conference Being Held at West Virginia State University

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The International Conductor's Conference is being held on the campus of West Virginia State University the week of June 18 - 23. Conductors from the local area and across the globe will work with an orchestra chosen specifically for this project. Scott Woodard, WVSU Director of Bands and Chair of the Music Department, created and coordinated the event.

The 10 conductors participating include two WVSU advanced conducting students along with individuals from as far away as Korea and India. They will convene on the campus for a series of workshops focusing on the orchestral conducting method of Ilya Musin. Musin taught conducting at the Leningrad Conservatory for 67 years and has been responsible for the careers of some of the best conductors in the world. He was the first to develop a system of allowing students to communicate with the orchestra via the hands with a minimum of verbal instruction.

The week of musical conducting will culminate in a free performance on Saturday, June 23 at 12:15 p.m. in the WVSU Davis Fine Arts Building. The event is open to the public.
