WVSU Summer Activities


INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Summer is a busy season on the West Virginia State University campus. In addition to a three-week summer session May 21 - June 8 and a six-week summer session June 11 - July 20, WVSU hosts a variety of activities for young people.

Yellow Jacket coaches are conducting camps throughout the summer in baseball softball, basketball, tennis and volleyball. For information contact the Athletics Office at 304-766-3165 or go to www.wvsuyellowjackets.com.

The Upward Bound summer component will be on the campus from June 10 to July 14. This program is designed for high school students who may be the first in their family to attend college. They will attend a variety of classes and activities geared to success in higher education. For information call 304-766-3120.

On June 17 - 30 the Summer Transportation Institute, a residential camp for 6th - 9th graders who are interested in the transportation industry, will be in session. For information contact Paul Henderson at 304-205-7973.

Bruce Adolphe, the Piano Puzzler, will hold a master class and workshop on June 18 from 10 a.m. to Noon in the Ferrell Hall auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

On June 19, rockets will blast off as the University hosts NASA Day from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to experience a day of science education and hand-on activities.

Fast Track Day Camps will be held June 11 - 15 and July 9 - 13 at the Shawnee Park Clubhouse. Fast Track is one of several nutrition education programs offered by West Virginia State University Extension Service. Students who have completed 5th, 6th, or 7th grades will learn about cooking, kitchen safety, safe food handling, basic nutrition, consumer literacy and fitness activities. The Charleston Stage Company will hold all three of its Summer Arts Camps at WVSU with new classes and new artists.
Early Elementary Camp (grades preschool-2) - June 25-29, 2012
Elementary Camp (grades 3 - 6) - July 2 - 13
Junior/Senior High Camp (grades 7 - 12) - July 16 -27

Science Engineering Mathematics & Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) camps will be held July 9 - 13, July 16 - 20 and July 23 - 27. The morning and afternoon sessions are designed for young people in grades K - 12 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Health, Science, Technology Academy (HSTA) will be held July 15 - 20. This camp is for 10th graders enrolled in local HSTA programs. For information contact Paul Henderson at 304-205-7973.

The Hip Hop Camp will take place July 23 - 25. Participants ages 12 - 17 will take part in hands-on activities related to the music industry. Cost is $50. For information contact Chris Kessell at 304-205-7973.

Visit WVSU's Gus R. Douglass Institute at the West Virginia State Fair in Lewisburg on Aug. 10 - 18.
