Leadership Gifts Spark $12M Campaign

West Virginia State University kicks off campaign with early leadership gifts

Donations totaling $1,226,000 provide early boost toward ambitious $12.5 million goal.

Campaign will fund investments in scholarships and student programming initiatives.  

Institute, WV - Institute, West Virginia (July 19). West Virginia State University (WVSU) officially launched its five-year fundraising campaign. The beginning “quiet” phase of the campaign was announced in March 2011. Donations received totaling $1,226,000 provided an early boost toward the $12.5 million goal. These initial gifts give the campaign significant early momentum toward its goal of attracting $12.5 million in donations by 2016.

      “These leadership gifts reaffirm that WVSU has a national presence reflecting the depth of strong confidence and support for our mission, direction and strategic plans,” said Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr., WVSU president.  “We will build on this successful beginning by attracting the full funding needed to ensure our future student prosperity.”

      “Everyone involved with the university deeply appreciates the generosity of our donors, whose lead gifts will make a real difference in enabling our students in need of financial assistance to experience the power of education,” he added.

Officially named “Transforming for a Global Economy: The Campaign for West Virginia State University,” the fund raising effort will fuel critical investments in scholarships and student leadership development programming.  It is a key element in WVSU’s strategic plan to establish a widely recognized reputation for academic excellence and student success, while strengthening the institution’s ability to offer flexible, high-quality educational programs closely aligned with the Kanawha Valley’s regional economic development needs. Eric Coleman, former chairman of the University’s Board of Governors and a senior commercial manager at Dow Chemical, is leading the campaign as co-chairman.

       “These early gifts provide powerful credibility needed to attract even more leadership gifts, and broaden participation in the campaign across our alumni population, as well as corporations, foundations and the general public,” Coleman commented.
