Program Description

Upward Bound Math Science and Upward Bound Classic are federally funded pre-college programs that prepare first-generation students for success in education beyond high school. These programs annually serve 160 students from Kanawha, Logan, Fayette and Logan counties. The average class size is 15 - 20 students.

Available Positions

  • Math Instructor (Geometry and Calculus)
  • History Instructor
  • Robotics Instructor
  • English Instructor (11th and 12th grade)
  • Physic Instructor
  • Forensic Science Instructor


Instructors are responsible for teaching approximately four hours each day in their respective discipline (Monday through Friday). In addition, all instructors are expected to:

  • Develop innovative and interactive instructional programs to engage students
  • Maintain a positive learning environment inside the classroom in which students are respected and respectful, and in which learning and knowledge are deeply valued
  • Maintain attendance, grade, and evaluation records for assigned students on a weekly basis
  • Prepare weekly lesson plans and homework schedules
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, parent/student summer orientation, awards ceremony, family picnic and UB Olympics

Qualifications

West Virginia teaching certificate or demonstrated knowledge and the ability to develop innovative and interactive instructional courses to engage and inspire students.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to prepare a brief lesson demonstration as part of the interview process. Interviews will take place during the month of April on the campus of West Virginia State University.
