Homecoming 2012 Highlights

Homecoming 2012 at West Virginia State was quite a momentous occasion as we witnessed many firsts. This year marked our President's very first Homecoming as a Yellow Jacket. We also saw many new faces during the induction ceremony for the National Alumni Association, welcoming Mr. Charles Boddy, '70, as the Association President, Mr. Samuel Lynch, '61, as the new Far West Regional Director, Ms. Barbara J. Price, '68, as the new Mid West Regional Director, and Dr. Lateef Saffore, '96, as First Vice President. The Office of Alumni Relations also had the privilege of naming the first ever WVSU Young Professional Achievement Award Winner, Mrs. Camille Shipman-Stephens, '96.

Even with all the new happenings, this year's event was very much a time of tradition. Mr. Anthony Rogers, '52, was named West Virginia State's Alumnus of the Year during the Friday evening dinner at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, WV. To view more information about Mr. Rogers, click here. The graduating classes of  1937, 42, 47, 52, 57, 62, 67, 72, 77, 82, 87, 92, 97, 2002 and 2007 were also honored during this dinner. Participants then danced the night away at the W-Club's annual dance which featured Carl Carlton as their headliner for this year's event.

The campus held its inaugural Yellow Jacket 5K Run on the Saturday of Homecoming to help provide our students with much needed scholarship funds and event was a tremendous success. Other new offerings such as a special display by University Archives on the history of the institution as well as a free coffee/cocoa hour provided by the Student Government Association helped to kick off the Saturday of Homecoming. Events such as the parade, football game, and step show continued to draw on the tradition that Homecoming brings to campus each fall.

On campus activities were followed by the Alumni & Friends buffet and dance at the Embassy Suites where attendees were able to catch up with friends and begin the hard process of saying farewell for another year.

We hope that each person who attended the events of this year's Homecoming had an enjoyable and memorable time and we definitely hope to see you at Homecoming 2013. Rest assured that the Office of Alumni Relations, the National Alumni Association, and the entire campus of West Virginia State University are in the process of planning some wonderful events for 2013!
