Welcome to West Virginia State University's Army Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC), also known as the Yellow Jacket Battalion!

Our classes are open to all WVSU students - no military training is required. Students that sign up for our classes are considered Cadets (Officers in training). Non-contracted students taking our classes have no requirement to serve in the military.

Every semester we highlight the multiple accomplishments within our program in the Yellow Jacket Battalion newsletterCLICK HERE to see a copy of our latest newsletter!

The "Yellow Jacket" Battalion has a long and proud tradition of commissioning over 900 men and women as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army. We proudly boast fifteen general officers that have graduated from our program, to include one alumni member, Major General Charles C. Rogers, a recipient of our nation's highest recognition, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Major General Rogers is the only surviving West Virginia native to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.

Just how good is our Leadership Program?  We've produced more General Officers than any other HBCU or similar sized University that offers ROTC.  Our ROTC Hall of Fame honors over 130 alumni that have risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (or higher) and have achieved prominent positions in the military, public sector, and private industries.  Yeah, we're just that good!

Each semester we offer three classes to fully-enrolled students: the morning physical fitness class (MSC 150/151/250/251/350/351/450/451), academic classes (MSC 101/102/201/202/301/302/401/402), and the practical "hands-on" LAB (MSC 103/104/203/204/303/304/403/404) where you actually apply the instructional material as both a leader, and a member of a team.

Contracted students receive additional money each month, and are offered a variety of advanced summer training options to help prepare them for a career as an officer in either the active army or the reserves (National Guard or Army Reserves).  The "contract" is a promise that students will graduate with a specific degree on a future date, upon which the Army will commission the student as an officer and designate their specialty (also known as branch) in the Active Army, US Army Reserves, or in the West Virginia National Guard.

If you are interested in a professional career as an Army Officer in the National Guard, the US Army Reserves, or the Active Army, please contact our Scholarship and Enrollment Officer, Mr. Gordon Ramey at gramey@wvstateu.edu, call (304) 766-3295, or simply stop by the Ferguson-Lincoln building on the southern end of campus to discuss your career plans.
